So, I got laid off out of the blue on January 27th. Yep, just like that. I had been with the company for 13 years—the longest I’ve ever stayed anywhere. Honestly, it felt like a breakup. They told me I didn’t do anything wrong, but they had recently acquired two smaller companies, one of which was an IT firm. There was a guy there who could do what I did, but he was cheaper (albeit slower). I guess it was a strategic money move, but it still stung.
The owner and I had a good relationship, and he was kind enough to give me a generous severance package and a solid recommendation if I needed it. Still, I was left wondering, “What now?”
Fast forward 1 month and 12 days, and I finally landed a new job! And guess what? Turns out my old job was massively underpaying me. My new role came with a $12K pay bump! I was floored. Not only that, but once I master the skills at this new place, there’s an even larger pay increase waiting for me in about two years. Talk about a silver lining!
Here’s the kicker: I still have 4 severance checks coming in, which I can now just stash in the bank. It’s like the universe decided to make up for the stress I went through.
Now, let me tell you, I hadn’t applied for a job in 13 years. The process was brutal—resumes, cover letters, interviews, the whole nine yards. I treated job hunting like it was my full-time job, and it still took over a month. The anxiety was real, and I quickly realized how much I hate not having a job. It’s not just about the money; it’s about the routine, the purpose, and the sense of accomplishment.
